2 Stroke Motorcycles for Sale Funny

Zero Hour: NEW 1984 Yamaha RZV500R!

When the mind turns to imported motorcycles, the smell of castor oil wafts in the air. Such is the case in the United States at least, as most smokers were phased out of EPA nomenclature by the end of the 1970s. Two strokes were still being built and sold elsewhere however, and among the Holy Grail of the ring-a-ding set were the 500cc big boys – the Suzuki Gamma and the Yamaha RZ. In the 1980s this was as close to a GP racing machine for the street that you could buy. But with the end of the 1980s came the end of new smokers, leaving dreamers and collectors without the ability to purchase a new bike. Enter the wild world of collecting, providing us with this beautiful example of an essentially NEW 1984 Yamaha RZV500R – zero hours on engine, and just 2-ish kilometers on the odometer (likely from initially delivery plus some pushing around). What an amazing time capsule this is!

1984 Yamaha RZV500R for sale on eBay

Sporting largely similar livery as its rest-of-world RZ cousin, the RZV was a Japanese home market only model that had all the good stuff: aluminum frame instead of the mild steel unit on the RZ, some additional aluminum ancillary bits with some magnesium tossed in for good measure, a cool fuel level gauge built into the temp gauge circuitry, and adjustable suspension. That is all upside. Besides losing about 9 or 10 Kilos of weight (20 lbs give or take in decidedly non-metric U.S. of A), the RZV is missing a few other things – like horsepowers. The RZV is restricted to a federally mandated power level of approximately 65 HP to meet Japanese home market requirements. The bike also incorporates a red light when 55 MPH is exceeded (this light also doubles as the low oil light – so beware of speeding when your two-stroke oil tank is low!). But NONE of these downsides likely impact this machine, as it is very, very unlike to ever be ridden in anger.

From the seller:
New 1984 Yamaha RZV500R 51X museum piece

The rarest of 500cc two strokes the 1984 Yamaha RZV500R of which only 1600 were built. Not to be confused with the RZ500 or RD500 which had steel frames. This Japanese only model 51X featured a custom alloy frame and many trick features to lower its weight by 20lbs. This is the most collectible 500 two stroke production model from the 80s.

This 2 push kilometer – zero hour example spent its life in a Japanese collection until it was sold to RDM motors in Japan in 2016. The current owner purchase it from RDM and airfreighted it to California at considerable expense with the help of Moto2GP. The factory anti scuff plastic stickers are still on the frame and the mirrors and manual still vacuum sealed in original factory delivery bag. The tool kit is under the seat and it has two Factory keys plus a Yamaha factory spare windscreen. This example has never been titled or registered. Sold with a Bill of Sale only.

More from the seller:
It's sitting on Dunlop original date coded tires from 1984. The bike is very clean with no repairs or scratches. The paint on the tank has developed small crazing that's barely noticeable on the thin white inbetween the red and blue divide. The windscreens black paint accent is peeling off but has a factory replacement windscreen still in box. Nothing else is noted. It comes with a copy of the factory build sheet in Japanese with VIN. The fairings have never been removed.

While never run this bike could be restored or kept as a museum piece. This bike has been followed by many in Yamaha forums since it's discovery in 2015. It's believed to be one of two or three New RZV500R's left in existence worldwide.

This bike comes with a Bill of Sale and is a CASH sale only. It must be picked up as I do not ship.

The Yamaha RZ500 was always a coveted example of forbidden fruit in the US. But the RZV was ever more so rare, offering the RZ experience with less weight and more exotic components. The RZV is restricted in power to satisfy Japanese DOT laws, but as the restriction is exhaust-based (i.e. not computer electronics), this is easily defeated: non-restrictive chambers and appropriate re-jetting and the RZV will scream at full song like the rest of world models. But again, I don't foresee anyone purchasing such a bike as this and turning around and putting miles on it. It is a shame in some ways, but at least there exist like new examples that we can all drool over.

This is an auction with a Buy It Now option. For either you'd better bring your wallet. While extremely clean RZ500s have topped $20k in the past, this never-been-ridden rarer RZV is looking to bring in a high 5 figure price – very high 5 figures, as in a $95,000 BIN. Bidding is already at the $70k mark, with reserve still in place. Check out all of the details – and the action – here. Good Luck!!

New Old Stock: 1989 Suzuki RG500 with 1 mile!

Think Small – 1987 Suzuki RG250 Gamma

Most often we find the junior two-strokes in a much sadder state, but this one has been given some recent attention.  This Canadian example might be a good entrĂ©e into the smoky side of sportbikes.

1987 Suzuki RG250 Gamma for sale on eBay

Suzuki seems to have had a 247cc two stroke twin in the line-up forever, but the RG250 and Gamma took the model to sportier places.  For 1986-7 the Mk. 3 Gamma used a power valve – Automatic Exhaust Control in marketing lingo.  49 hp was a slight increase but the width of the power band was the emphasis.  Revised brakes were dual four-piston affairs, and the forks included an anti-dive circuit.  The Full Floater monoshock had made its way over from the motocross side and allowed the shock to be positioned further forward, centralizing mass, and the fully adjustable shock could be shorter and use lighter springs.  16-inch front /18 rear tires have -80's stagger, but with a 100mm section not much width.

Though not quite a full resto, this owner has done more than just paint work and gives some options to the next rider.  Some rubber hole plugs and a bar-end mirror might slip this 250 through the air easier, and as problematic as they can be, some lower profile front blinkers seem to be in order.  The white wheels are the next cosmetic item, or they could go black and pretty badass.  With new tires, brakes and battery, more improvements could be made without taking it off the road.  A short – video – is offered, along with notes from the eBay auction:

Numbers matching engine and frame and the bodywork is original – not aftermarket.  Original Canadian Bike.

The bike was originally the two tone blue and white but was repainted in the factory correct 1987 colour red/black and white (it just looks better with this livery)

Sounds great – tons of power for the size and razor sharp handling with the aluminum twin spar frame (it was known as the first street legal race bike)

Parallel Two Cylinder with Suzuki's AEC system – Automatic Exhaust Control – power is about 50 hp and weight is under 300 pounds! Full Floater Suspension, Six Speed transmission.

– Brand new tires

– Brakes fully rebuilt

– Brand new battery

– New upholstery on seat

Only the reserve will tell whether this owner considers this a finished piece or a nice rider with a few details to address, and of course repairs which any 35 year-old bike can expect.  Many RG250's are shown without the lowers, and the factory fairings are a strong positive.  At this point in their lives, most have less miles but more corrosion on the exposed aluminum.  A lot of pluses and minuses to weigh over the next few days.

Think Small – 1987 Suzuki RG250 Gamma

Market Rules – 1986 Honda NS400R

To have been in a 1986 showroom – Suzuki had the RG500 and Yamaha the RZ500, but Honda again went for a bit more lightness and made their GP replica a 400, which at least made sense in Japan.  This example from north of the border really shines considering its nearly 16K miles.

1986 Honda NS400R for sale on eBay

To keep up with the other race reps, Honda produced a fair likeness of  Freddie Spencer's NS500 racer, with a peculiar V3 smoker, small pattern alloy chassis, and classic full fairing.  Three Keihin flat-slides are in the vee, making 72 hp available on an ATAC power valve-assisted torque curve.  Sleepy through 5,000 rpm, the screaming shortly starts and runs to 9,500 rpm and 125 mph.  Forks were air-assisted with TRAC anti-dive, and a Pro-Link monoshock was underneath.  Brake and tire sizes remind you that this a potent middleweight rather than a superbike.  Oil injection and all the street gear brought the fueled weight up to just over 400 lbs. wet, not bad though Spencer's 500 weighed almost 100 lbs. less.

Offered by a private individual in Quebec, this excellent example looks complete and correct right down to the sidestand fairing.  Freddie's signature is on the seat bottom, though present day etiquette would have it right on top of the tailcone.  A quick video is offered – here –.  We'll let the comments from the eBay auction pick up the story –

1986 Canadian NS400R Freddie Spencer HRC EDITION with the signature – V3 cylinders – 2 stroke – very RARE: less than 400 sold in the whole America… never produced for USA market – 360 lbs dry weight (approx).  Includes current Quebec-CA Clean title/ownership at my name… Immaculate condition and excellent very rare example of a 36 years old collectable 2 stroke bike… only 25,330 km (15,740 miles)… a similar NS 400R like this one just sold for $25,300 this past January at Mecum auction in Vegas (You can see it on last picture).

Only imperfections I could see are a very small paint crack under right side mirror (professionally repaired)… you can see it on the zoomed picture with a green arrow. The brake hoses are not oem because the rubber was cracked in a few places on the previous ones… and it was hard to find an oem hose.

The rear top muffler guard are dismantled for a better look… but is in perfect condition like you can see in the picture.

Reviewers told of a street machine with clear racing lineage, though the power valve system civilized its manners more than most smokers.  None of the mid-size two strokes were offered in the USA, and though they've had some grey market presence here, all were retired by the end of 1987.  Maybe some hi-res pictures would help the puzzling lack of bids, but we'll be watching.

1986 Suzuki RG500 with Lance Gamma Upgrades

The Suzuki RG500 needs no introduction on this website, especially when Lance Gamma has been involved in the updates. Rick Lance was the Jedi Knight of RG500 tuning and upgrades. A master of his craft.

This auction listing is currently bid to $16,100 and has a buy-it-now of $42,995. Somewhere in-between a buyer is going to score a straight up legend.

1986 Suzuki RG500 for sale

from the seller:

If you are looking for a completely stock Suzuki RG500, look elsewhere! If you are looking for an RG that was built to be all that an RG can be, read on! I found this 1986 RG500 over a decade ago through Rick Lance of Lance Gamma fame. While Rick is no longer with us, he was the "GO TO GAMMA GUY" until his passing a few years ago. He had worked with the previous owner of this bike to help him build a bike with all the best parts and technology available for an RG at the time. The project started with an original stock Canadian import bike (Km speedometer) in good condition with approximately 11,000 miles on it. The bike was disassembled as required and all aspects of it built to the highest specifications for a super fun street racer.

The engine was gone through, cranks rebuilt and new stock bore pistons and rings installed. A new Dyson NOVA close ratio transmission along with their Nova straight cut primary gear set installed to address the well-known weaknesses of the stock RG transmission. In addition, a Lance Gamma clutch kit was installed to alleviate any clutch related issues. A shifter support was added as well to alleviate another well-known RG weakness. Carbs were rebuilt with a set of Lance Gamma float valves and Tripod air filters added to maximize fuel and air flow. Last, a set of TC expansion chambers added to handle exhaust duties.

To accommodate the TC chambers, a modified Lance Gamma battery/oil tank relocation kit was added along with a super lightweight Shorai lithium battery. And to make sure there were no overheating problems, an oversize aluminum radiator was added as well.

Handling was addressed next. Per Rick's recommendation, stock wheels were exchanged for a set of freshly powder coated 17" GSX wheels front and rear with custom machined spacers. These wheels are wider than stock, convert the stock 16" front rim to 17" and allow a much larger selection of high performance tires to be used. Front brakes were upgraded with the addition of GSXR calipers, EBC discs, and Galfer steel braided brake lines. A new aluminum front fork brace was added as well. At the rear, an Ohlins shock with adjustable ride height adjuster was added along with another Galfer steel braided line.

Last, to deal with the cosmetic cracking issues that the stock plastic fairing, belly pan and seat cowl had, an Air Tech fairing and rear cowl was painted to match the paint scheme of the original paint tank. There are a few very minor touch ups on the right side of the front fairing nose where another bike from my collection fell into it, but they are minor at best (see pics). There are also a few very small stress cracks in the white paint on the rear cowl that even Air Tech wasn't able to avoid with expansion chambers in such close proximity (again, see pics).

Mod Summary:

· Dyson Nova Close Ratio Transmission
· Dyson Nova Straight Cut Primary Gears
· Lance Gamma Clutch Kit
· Lance Gamma Float Valves
· Lance Gamma TriPod Air Filters

The previous owner enjoyed the bike for a 1000 or so miles after it was built and then passed it on to me. I GREATLY enjoyed it for a several hundred more miles and promptly ruptured two discs in my lower back and haven't ridden it in anger since! I finally "pickled" the bike about eight years ago, and it has been sitting in my indoor collection since. I have finally come to the realization that my age and health will prevent me from enjoying it as intended again so it is time to pass it on to the next caretaker. It is the third RG500 I have owned and by far the best and most fun one of the three!

I have just changed the transmission oil, refreshed the brake fluid in both front and rear brake systems and put in new coolant. I've included some pics of the bike with the body work off so you can see just how clean this bike is. I also included a pic of the plugs as they came out of the bike from the last time it was run and put into storage (1-2-3-4 R to L, jetting is spot on!).

I've since started and run the bike using a 30:1 premix to be sure all is well (I have not fully checked the automatic oiling system but it appeared to working correctly after start). Started on the fifth kick after eight years! Everything works as best I can tell, but I would suggest a thorough recommissioning to be sure all is in order. Oh, and new tires if you intend to ride it in anger as it is intended. The Metzler ME3's that are on it are over a decade old now! The bike also comes with two original Suzuki keys, the original owner's manual, an original Suzuki shop manual, a variety of mods information and documentation, and both an original parts micro-fiche and a hard copy print out of it. Last, I DO NOT have any of the original stock parts. What you see in the pics is what you get.

As an ex-AMA Pro Roadracer, this bike is as close as you are likely to get to the riding experience of the TZ250 and TZ700 I raced back in the day. It is a VERY NICE survivor and one which I'm sure I will regret selling, but age and medical issues say it's got to go.

This is a very nice example, but it is a USED motorcycle that is almost 40 years old and it is NOT perfect. It is sold as is where is with NO warranty, NO guaranty or any other kind of "–ty". The motorcycle has a clear Arizona title in my name with no liens so no issues there. I am happy to arrange a pre-sale inspection if you care to see it before you bid.

Little Italy – 1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Replica

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

Up for sale today we have a 1995 RS250 Reggiani Race Replica. The RS250 was first released in 1994 after Aprilia pocketed both the 125cc and 250cc championships. While RS250s were mostly popular in Europe, some examples, including this one on BAT, have made their way into collections stateside.

The RS250 is what you would get if you plucked a commoner out of Japan and took them on a shopping spree in the Milan Fashion District. Swap the Asics for some Ferragamos. Aprilia realized there was no need to reinvent the wheel to make their way to the top step of a highly contested 250cc class. They started with Suzuki's RGV250 engine and wrapped it in go-fast bits. The seller does a good job detailing the specs in the listing so I'll stay out of the way there.

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

To keep up appearances, Aprilia had to boost the power spec so their owners could scoff at regular 250s wherever they went. With some tweaks, Aprilia claimed they got 72.5 hp but that number was a bit lower in reality. I don't think the hp number is all that important for these bikes anyway. The experience of riding a two-stroke race bike on the street is really what you are buying. If you do fancy a bit more power check out this exhaust system from Tyga Performance.

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

Looking at the frame of the RS250 compared to its Japanese counterparts, you see the distinct design philosophies that have goverened everything that has come out of Japan and Italy. Keep in mind, this isn't just a pretty face. The swingarm is asymmetrical to allow for more cornering clearance with the exhaust, the frame is made out of magnesium and aluminum to keep the weight down, and the Brembo binders that pinch two 298mm discs up front are more than adequate for race use.

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

The seller completed a pretty thorough overhaul of the engine. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and there about 7 pictures of the engine overhaul in the listing and 3 videos of the bike running so have at it.

1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Racing Replica

From the seller:

This 1995 Aprilia RS250 was produced as a tribute to Aprilia factory rider Loris Reggiani and is powered by a 249cc two-stroke V-twin paired with a six-speed transmission. The bike is finished in red, purple, and gray and is equipped with a solo saddle, a tinted windscreen, adjustable suspension, a Zeeltronics  programable ECU, a two-into-two exhaust system, twin Mikuni carburetors, triple Brembo disc brakes, and 17″ wheels. The bike was reportedly first registered in the Netherlands, and was acquired by the seller in 2019 in Florida and subsequently relocated to Texas. Work under current ownership included overhauls of the engine and suspension, and replacing the ECU, tires, and more. This RS250 is now offered with receipts and a clean Texas title in the seller's name that lists it as a 1996 model.

With 5,700 miles and a fresh rebuild, this bike seems like it's in pretty good mechanical and cosmetic condition. A clean 1995 RS250 Chesterfield with just over 4,000 was listed for $14K and sold in 6/21 on RSBFS!

I'll be honest. By the time I started following road racing, in my mind, two smokers were pretty much equivalent to Nokia bar phones. That being said, the only thing the two have in common are the era in which they were mainstream. The comparison stops there.

Little Italy – 1995 Aprilia RS250 Loris Reggiani Replica

Hive Mentality – 1984 Yamaha RZ350

With spring in full swing and summer right around the corner RZ350s are popping up like, well, weeds. Scare in quality and quantity, 2022 has brought out a spate of strong contenders; bikes that present as well as any we have seen. So too is today's find, a 1984 bumble bee 350 out of Montana that looks fantastic.

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

Needing no introduction – but getting one anyway – the RZ350 was the last gasp of two-stroke street bike goodness in the early 1980s. Festooned with YVPS, oil injection, catalytic converters and EVAP canisters, the RZ was as close as EPA legal as could be with 1984 technology. Significantly choked by the emissions equipment (which was also very, very heavy), most RZs enjoyed a life on steroids – dropping the cats for a pair of expansion chambers, new fatter jets and improved upstream airflow. The RZ350 was an over achiever, running with the 550cc middleweights of the day, and were popular club racers to boot. Today, these are hard to find in many parts of the country, and harder still to find in original – or close to original – condition.

From the seller:
I am slimming down my collection, so its time for this time capsule to go. I purchased this 1984 RZ350 from the original owner in 2010. Its been in my garage ever since, in dry Montana, so there is very little corrosion. It has 3,714 original miles. I will also include the original exhaust pipes (photos coming soon). Overall, the bike is in very, very good condition for its age. Its not pristine, but very nice! The tires are old, so they are due for replacement and the brakes could probably be bled. There are a couple stickers on one of the fork tubes that can be removed.

More from the seller:
The original owner installed Spec II exhaust pipes. The airbox and intake are stock. It has steel braided brake lines on the front, and a Telefix fork brace.

There is no evidence of the bike ever being down. The seat is perfect. The gas tank has no dents and is very near perfect. It starts from cold on the first kick and idles perfectly.

I have a clean and clear Montana title.

The seller has also shared a cold start video on this bike:

RZs are worth real money these days. You can forget when you could pick up a beater for a grand or less; there is no value in lamenting the great one you sold for $2k. This is the ups and downs of the market, and while the RZ has had its unfair share of downs, it is currently on a credible upswing. The bidding on this very clean bike with period correct aftermarket add-ons (with original pipes available!) is well over $10k with a lot of interest. The reserve is still in place, so there is likely a lot more to play for. Only 3,700 miles on this time capsule, meaning that the winning bidder will have a lightly used rider that shows as well as any we've seen. Check out all of the details here, and Good Luck!!

The Same, But Different: 1984 Yamaha RZ350

In an earlier post, RSBFS Staff Writer Donn notes: Hardly a week goes by that a new RZ350 doesn't pop up these days! I would like to take this opportunity to upgrade that statement considerably. Because today we have a double RZ350 Friday (take two – they're small)! Forget Friday the 13th. This is Friday the RZ350th!

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

This particular RZ shows very differently than the 1985 model posted by Donn HERE. This RZ seems to have a bit less info, and a potentially greater number of unknowns. It is clear that it has experienced some modifications along the line, from Airtech bodywork to updated expansion chambers, bar end mirrors, a complete replacement top end (with YPVS delete), and what appears to be some minor rash on the right-hand side case. But it is a RZ after all – and remains very popular with readers and riders alike. There are pristine, museum-style offerings that go for big, big bucks, ridden and hot rodded bikes that go for elevated prices, and then there are the bottom feeder bikes that have been used up, abused often and offered at a ridiculous price. This particular example feels more like the middle tier – modded and used, but presentable – and is pretty close in pricing to the 1985 example posted by Donn earlier today.

From the seller:
This 1984 Yamaha RZ350 is an original. The owner has had it for 5+ years. The vehicle runs great and is mainly used for weekend rides.

Bike has had a small restoration. Frame and swing arm have been powder coated. All new seals in components forks, front brakes, front master cylinder, etc. Has Airtech full fairing kit. Does not have YPVS anymore currently has a banshee top end. I do not have any of the original parts. Thanks for looking.

The seller has included the following walk around video of this particular bike. I am not exactly sure why one of the foot pegs is zip tied up out of the way, but otherwise the video shows a clean – but modified – RZ350:

Regardless of condition, RZ350s are hot property. That value is increased as the weather turns to a point where riding is possible around the country, and we are all itching to grab our leathers and hoon. And while we always recommend collectors purchase the best example they can find/afford, the truth of the matter is the RZ will always be in demand; even questionable bikes are fetching absurd prices. We do not see that changing at all in the future, except the prices are likely to be even higher. These are fun machines that really wail, they strike a pose very well in parking lots for bike night or cars and coffee, and are reasonably reliable given the volatile nature of two strokes. You can check this one out here as a compare and contrast – this is a great time to be in the RZ market!!! Good Luck!
